GayTV Recap: Days of Our Lives (Episodes 54x161-54x181)

Days of Our Lives has continued the story of Will's medical crisis in recent weeks. Episode 54x161 began with Will (played by Chandler Massey) and Sonny (played by Freddie Smith) at the Kiriakis mansion, preparing to head back to the hospital so that Will could get a check-up on his brain tumor. They crossed paths with their shared distant cousin Claire, as she was deep in thought about her arson secret. They all briefly discussed the recent death of another family member, the young Holly, before Will & Sonny departed for the hospital.

They arrived at the hospital, met by their shared aunt Kayla, who revealed she's become part of Will's treatment team, along with Sarah and his uncle Rex. They discussed the grief over Holly, before Will headed off to radiology. He returned later to find Sonny waiting for him. They talked about how the hospital was taking good care of him. Will thanked Sonny for taking care of him too, and helping him with their daughter Ari, as he was afraid the young girl was catching onto the fact that he was ill.

Kayla joined them after getting the results from Will's latest brain scan. Kayla revealed to them that she was disappointed that the tumor had shown no signs of shrinking, despite his latest radiation treatment. Sonny & Kayla tried to stay positive, but Will was not happy that there wasn't any progress in his condition, given that the tumor was causing him to behave strangely. Kayla promised that she would review his case and know it better than anyone else by the end of the day.

Sonny joked about Will always being a little weird as part of his charm, drawing a smile and hug from Will. They headed back to Sonny's place, where Sonny tried to get him take his mind off his tumor by discussing tactics for talking to Ari about the tragic death of her young playmate Holly. Sonny was caught off-guard when Will stared at him blankly, wondering what he was talking about. Sonny was left frightened, as Will seemed to now have no memory of the tragedy they had been talking about throughout their day.

This led the duo back to the hospital in Episode 54x164, where they explained Will's lapse in memory to Rex. He kept positive, saying it was a good sign that this was only temporary and Will's memory had fully returned. Will grew more frustrated as his symptoms had not subsided, now causing memory loss. Rex told him that his team was working to figure out the next step in his treatment. This didn't leave Will feeling any better.

Sonny tried to keep Will positive, but when they were left alone he told Sonny that he felt Rex might be keeping something from him related to his condition. Sonny told him that he couldn't go down that road. They were then joined by Kayla, who revealed that after they left the hospital, she noticed something while reviewing Will's records. It had to do with the potential cause of Will's oddly-behaving tumor. Will was eager to hear the update. Kayla revealed that the scans revealed a trace amount of the chemical that Will got injected with to cure his amnesia.

Will was stunned as he put the pieces together, realizing that Kayla was saying that the injection he took might have caused his brain tumor. Kayla told him that she wasn't drawing any firm conclusions just yet, because they couldn't, given that they no longer have access to the serum, or Dr. Rolf's formula. Will blamed himself, saying that his determination to get his memory back was now causing him to have a brain tumor that isn't getting any better. Sonny again tried to keep him to stay positive, as Kayla promised they weren't giving up, especially now that they have a potential culprit to focus on. Without the formula to analyze, it was going to be difficult, but she reminded Will that he was their best weapon, if he stayed strong.

Sonny vowed that they were going to keep fighting. The couple held hands in solidarity. They later returned to Sonny's house, where Will remained feeling defeated after learning that his actions to ignore medical advice and get injected with Dr. Rolf's serum had led to his brain tumor. He wondered if his quest to get his memory and his life back might now end his life. Sonny assured him that wasn't going to happen. Will then wondered how Dr. Rolf's diary with the formula in it could have just disappeared.

Episode 54x168 began with Will & Sonny joining Will's grandmother Marlena and her husband John at the pub. They filled in Will's family on his last appointment and Kayla's suspicions that Rolf's formula that restored Will's memory is likely the cause of his brain tumor. Marlena & John were sympathetic to Will and attempted to dispel Will's notion that this is all his fault. Will then experienced another emotional outburst, claiming they were right. It wasn't his fault. It was Marlena's for giving him the injection. They were all stunned as Will openly lashed out at his grandmother, claiming she should have known better, as a doctor, than to allow him to take the risk he did.

Sonny tried to calm Will down, as he regained his senses and didn't remember his outburst. They explained to him what he said to his grandmother, and Will got very emotional, swearing to her that he would never believe that she was responsible for his condition. Marlena easily forgave him, reminding him that the tumor was causing all of this, but Will begged her for forgiveness. He told them that he was getting very scared about the effects of the tumor and they all agreed to take him back to the hospital.

At the hospital, they were joined by Will's paternal grandmother Kate, who experienced even more concern about Will's condition, despite her son Rex's attempts to calm them all, reminding them that the tumor can cause the symptoms that Will was experiencing. They all experienced more fears as the tumor was refusing to shrink, putting more pressure against Will's brain. Talk turned to Dr. Rolf's formula for the serum, and given Rex's history under Rolf's tutelage, they all hoped he might have some record of the formula, which he promised to look into. They all departed to give Will time to rest, with Sonny refusing to leave his side.

Left alone, Will's frustrations grew as he wondered what was going to happen to him if they couldn't figure out his tumor and how to stop it. He told Sonny he was feeling less like himself and he didn't want that to become his new life. Sonny assured him that this was the fear talking and that no one was going to stop until this was fixed. He urged Will to get some sleep, assuring him that he would be right by his side, because there was nowhere else he would want to be. Outside the room, Marlena & John put their focus on Rolf's diary, containing the serum formula. John vowed to put all of his resources to work to find the book, which seemingly disappeared.

Episode 54x173 began with Will sitting in the town square, looking at the Horton memorial plaque, showing his great-grandparents, Tom and Alice Horton. His grandmother Kate found him there and realized that he didn't remember being related to the Hortons. Back at Sonny's house, he went looking to talk with Brady, only to find his aunt Maggie with a liquor bottle, which he found troubling given her former alcoholism. Back in the square, Will seemed to have his memory jogged from talking with Kate, who wanted to make sure he still remembered her. He told her that it was just temporary and he remembers everything now.

Sonny questioned Maggie about the liquor bottle she was holding in Brady's bedroom, not knowing she had been hiding in the room drinking after having fallen off the wagon. Maggie lied, telling him that she found the bottle which had to belong to Brady. Sonny grew more concerned, knowing his cousin Brady's history as an alcoholic as well. Back in the town square, Will & Kate crossed paths with Ted, the nefarious lawyer who helped Leo blackmail Will & Sonny, as he was enjoying time out with Will's cousin Hope. Will lashed out at Hope for trusting Ted after everything he did to him and Sonny. The vicious outburst subsided, as he realized it was a side effect of his tumor. Hope accepted his apology, though Kate reminded them that nothing Will said was untrue.

Back at the Kiriakis mansion, Sonny found Brady, telling him about crossing paths with Maggie and the bottle of liquor. Brady, knowing about Maggie's falling off the wagon, kept up her lie, telling Sonny that it was a momentary lapse, but he's fine and sober. Will arrived at the house and Sonny could tell instantly that something was wrong. Will told him that he was growing more scared about his tumor symptoms increasing. He asked Sonny to hold him and he obliged. Sonny promised Will that he would spare no expense to get Rolf's formula recreated so his tumor could be cured.

Episode 54x176 opened with Sonny emerging from the kitchen with ice cream, only to find Will gone. He got worried until Will appeared, revealing he had went upstairs to check on Ari, who was sleeping. He confided in Sonny that he was feeling a bit hopeless, wondering if he was being punished for his previous irresponsibility that led to Ari's conception. Sonny urged him not to let his mind go to dark places. He reminded him that they are going to have years more happiness with their family, noting how perfect Ari is with him as her father. He told Will that they were going to continue to fight, unaware that John's investigation had led him to the vindictive Eve, who had taken Rolf's diary to prevent it from falling into her husband Jack's hands so that he could not have his current amnesia cured.

While Eve, sympathetic to Will's plight, attempted to retrieve the diary from Sonny's villainous cousin Xander, Sonny & Will looked to have a quiet movie night together. They enjoyed their ice cream until Will began to experience a bad headache. He assured Sonny it was just brain freeze. They laughed it off and got back to the movie, only for Will to collapse moments later. A panicked Sonny tried to revive him, to no avail. He called 911, telling them that his husband was unconscious.

Will was rushed to the hospital and admitted once again. Sonny told him that he scared the hell out of him. Will thanked him for being there for him, as they were joined by Kayla, who wanted to run some tests to see how Will's fainting spell might have been related to his brain tumor. She later returned with the test results and had bad news. She told them that the tumor was growing and pressing on other parts of Will's brain, which was not good. She revealed that if they could not shrink the tumor or prevent it from continued growth, it would kill Will in a matter of days. Will & Sonny were left shocked at the stunning diagnosis. Meanwhile, Eve was unable to convince Xander to help the situation and hand over Rolf's diary.

Episode 54x178 continued the story with Sonny arriving in Will's hospital room to find him trying to write a story. Sonny was surprised that Will was attempting to work given Kayla's diagnosis. Will told him that if he didn't have much time left he was going to make it worthwhile. He said that if that was his last news story, he was going to make it the best one ever. When he began having trouble with words and memories, Sonny took the pad and pen, offering to scribe for him. Will soon gave up, as Sonny surmised that there were better ways to spend Will's time.

Will wondered what Sonny felt would be a better use of his time. Sonny reminded him that only the two of them and Kayla knew of his latest diagnosis. Sonny said that the rest of the people who love Will need to be told, but Will lashed out, saying he didn't care about that. He told Sonny that he was the one who was dying, so none of that mattered. Seeing the look on Sonny's face, Will realized that he was losing control again. He apologized and told him about his frustrations. He fought so hard to get his life back with Sonny and their daughter and now he was losing it all. Sonny held him, as Marlena arrived. This led Will to break the news to his grandmother that he only had days left to live.

Episode 54x179 began with Sonny in the waiting area of the hospital, talking to his mother on the phone about Will's condition. He was joined by John, who was looking for an update as well. Sonny told him that it wasn't good news. Back in Will's room, Marlena struggled to reign in her emotions over the possibility that Will only had days left to live. Will asked her to call his mother, Sami, regretting having kept her out of the loop on his tumor. Marlena promised to get in touch with her, so she could get back to Salem to be with him. He then experienced another bad headache, and Marlena encouraged him to breathe through it with her.

Back in the waiting area, John was saddened to learn of Will's poor condition and lack of time left. He tried to comfort Sonny. John told Sonny about his search for Rolf's diary coming up against another dead-end after Eve claimed to not have it. He told Sonny about her mysterious appearance in the office where the diary had been and Sonny wasn't sure he could believe her story. John agreed, but he didn't have any evidence or leverage that could get Eve to crack. This left Sonny feeling more upset.

Marlena joined Sonny & John, telling them that Will was experiencing a lot of pain so she asked the nurse to give him something to help. She told them that he was resting, but Sonny told them that he needed to get back into the room, to make sure that Will didn't ever feel alone. Marlena understood and offered to be there for Sonny if he ever needed to talk. Sonny thanked her before checking on Will. As Will slept, Sonny vowed to keep fighting, saying that Will was going to have to keep fighting too. Sonny later showed up Eve's office, demanding that his uncle's wife hand over Rolf's diary. He threatened to kill her if she didn't.

Episode 54x180 picked up right where things left off, with Sonny again threatening to kill Eve, which she said was a mistake on his part, given her new job as Salem police commissioner. Sonny told her that he knew about her being in the office where the diary disappeared from. He didn't care why she took it. He just needed it back to save Will's life. Eve told him that she told John the truth. She doesn't have the diary. She would never want to see anything bad happen to Will, but Sonny continued to lash out, accusing her of lying. He offered her whatever she wanted if she would just give it to him. Eve urged him to stop, but Sonny's emotions came out and said he couldn't stop. He couldn't give up until he saved Will's life. Eve swore to him on her daughter's grave that she didn't have the diary.

Sonny returned to Will's hospital room where he found him with his grandparents Kate and Roman. Will was still asleep, as Kate refused to accept that he only had days left to live. He lashed out at anyone she could, as Roman tried to keep her calm. Sonny told them about his confrontation with Eve and her being adamant that she didn't have the diary. Kate said they couldn't just accept the alternative of letting Will die. Will woke up and told them that it was what he had decided to do. He asked Kate to contact his father Lucas and she agreed, despite her emotions. Kate & Roman both professed their love for Will, before departing.

Sonny remained unsettled as he was left alone with Will, who wanted to know what was wrong. Sonny told him that he felt like he failed him, leaving Will surprised. Sonny told him about his visit to Eve, wishing he could have done more. Will reminded him that this was all because of his decision to do whatever it took to get his memory back. He said that he still had no regrets about taking the injections, because it got him back to Sonny and they found their love again. He told Sonny that he didn't want his parents to come back to town for a funeral. He said he would much rather it be for a wedding, catching Sonny off-guard. Will proposed, asking Sonny to marry him again.

Episode 54x181 continued things from there, replaying Will's proposal to Sonny, saying that he wanted everyone in his life, including their daughter, to know that the most amazing man he knew wanted to be his husband. Sonny accepted Will's proposal, saying that he could never say no to Will. They professed their love for each other and shared a kiss.

Sonny noticed Will's open diary on the table next to his bed. Will encouraged him to take a look at what he had been writing. Sonny noticed Will had filled a lot of pages. He read out loud from the journal, which included Will's feelings on their reunion and how deep their love was. When Sonny became overwhelmed by his emotions, Will took over reading from the journal, continuing to share his thoughts on how his memories were moments that he would cherish forever. They then began making calls to share their engagement news.

They were then joined by a hysterical Gabi, having heard about Will's new diagnosis. Gabi was freaking out and they tried to calm her down, as she couldn't believe that Will only had days left to live. Will held his daughter's mother, as he and Sonny continued to try to calm their friend's outburst of emotion. Will & Sonny both assured Gabi that she was stronger than she thought she was. They tried to redirect her sadness by telling her about their engagement and hopes of getting married before Will's passing.

Gabi noticed there was no engagement ring exchanged and she offered one of her own rings, to help them do their engagement right. She gave them a ring that included Ari's birthstone. While neither were much of a fan of the ring, they happily accepted it and Will proceeded to propose to Sonny once again, putting the ring on his finger. Sonny jokingly said that he could accept Will's proposal over and over. Gabi thanked them for letting her witness the proposal and the three friends all embraced.

Left alone, they discussed the ring not really being their style, but Sonny assured Will that it didn't matter. He would gladly take anything that showed the world that he was Will's love. He told Will that they could take each of these little moments and live in them, one at a time. Will agreed. The two cuddled up together on Will's hospital bed as the episode came to an end.
