GayTV Recap: Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (Episode 3x20)

Episode 3x20 of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments picked up the story of broken lovers Magnus (played by Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (played by Matthew Daddario), now apart thanks to the return of Magnus' demon father Asmodeus (played by Jack Yang). After returning his son's magic and convincing him not to rip his heartbroken memories of Alec from his own mind, Asmodeus looked to get closer to Magnus to help him harness his emotions for his own motives. Magnus tried his best to refuse his father's attempted compassion, though he found himself opening up a bit due to his father's words of support.

Meanwhile, Alec found himself confronted by his concerned mother, Maryse. She wondered what happened after he asked for the family ring to propose to Magnus, since she hadn't heard from either man since Magnus came to her shop. Alec revealed that he broke up with Magnus, shocking his mother, who demanded to know why. Alec returned the ring, only telling her that he did what he had to do in order for Magnus to be whole again.

With nowhere to live, Magnus was encouraged by his father to return to his apartment, despite its current occupant, the high warlock Lorenzo. Magnus asked Lorenzo to return his home, but he refused, even after seeing that Magnus had his powers back. Asmodeus made his presence known, revealing to Lorenzo that he had no choice, given that his father was a subject of Asmodeus, making Lorenzo a subject of Magnus. When Lorenzo still refused, Asmodeus used his power to transform Lorenzo into a lizard. This surprised Magnus, as he figured his father would have killed him. Asmodeus noted that Magnus didn't try to stop him, despite not knowing the outcome.

Later, Maryse arrived at the apartment looking for Lorenzo's help in finding Magnus, only for Magnus to answer the door. He kept her from entering and seeing his father and Lorenzo's new form, wondering what she wanted. Maryse told him that she was certain that Alec still loved him, showing him the family ring that Alec asked for in order to propose. Magnus was caught off-guard hearing of the planned proposal. When Maryse saw Magnus use his magic she realized what Alec meant by wanting him to be whole again. Magnus put the pieces together, realizing the timing of his father's return coincided with Alec breaking his heart.

Furious by his discovery of the truth behind Alec's decision to break-up with him, Magnus confronted his father, accusing him of destroying his life. Asmodeus claimed that Magnus was throwing his life away with mortal whims and human love, when he should have been focusing on gaining the power to join his father and rule the mortal plain, power that he knew was inside his son. Magnus reminded his father that they were nothing alike and he would never join him.

Magnus threatened to banish his father from his life, sending him back to Edom for good, but Asmodeus told him that he could never truly be rid of him. He would always find a way to come back to his son. Magnus admitted that he was right, but that would mean banishment to somewhere else. He unleashed his power on Asmodeus, surprising his father. Magnus opened a portal, telling his father that they both know what happens if you travel through a portal while unconscious. Asmodeus knew it would leave him trapped in limbo with no escape. Magnus then knocked him out, sending him into the portal. Magnus bid his father farewell.

Meanwhile, Alec joined his sister and their friends on a mission to rescue leading lady Clary and break her from her connection to her crazed brother Jonathan, which had caused her to turn on them. Alec used his bow and arrow to distract Jonathan, allowing Jace to capture him. Alec prepared to carry out the death sentence against Jonathan while Jace broke Clary free of his hold. This, however, caused Jonathan to transform into an even more dangerous form, knocking Alec down. Upon losing Clary, Jonathan vowed to Alec that he would destroy the Clave, the leading body behind the Shadowhunters.

The Shadowhunters later arrived in Alicante, the home city and headquarters of the Clave, just in time to see Jonathan opening a rift to the underworld allowing demons who have been wronged by the Shadowhunters to return to the world. While Clary & Jace tried to get through to Jonathan, Alec & his sister Isabelle headed out into battle against the flying demons. With a horde of them charging at the duo, they bravely stood their ground, only for Magnus to arrive, destroying the creatures before they could strike. He cheekily apologized for being late.

Alec told Magnus that he needed to leave, reminding him that they couldn't be together. Magnus revealed to him that he knew about Alec's deal with his father and what he did to get him his magic back. This led a relieved Alec to kiss him, before he could say much more. With the city under major attack around them, the two were reunited. Jace & Clary arrived, telling them that Jonathan got away and he wasn't going to stop the onslaught. Knowing time was running out, Magnus made a decision.

Magnus told the group that his father had told him that he had great power within him. If he harnessed it, he believed he could close the rift and stop the demons. Realizing this meant Magnus going to Edom to draw more power, Alec refused to let him go again. Magnus told him it might be the only way to save everyone. Magnus produced two rings in his hand, asking Alec to marry him. Alec agreed. They exchanged rings, professing their love. Before they could kiss, the attacks grew more destructive.

Sensing they were out of time, Magnus opened a portal to Edom, apologizing for being a runaway groom. Alec swore that Magnus would be coming back, because he always does. Magnus couldn't bring himself to provide a response to that. Magnus levitated into the portal, disappearing inside, as a teary-eyed Alec watched him depart.

With Magnus gone, a distraught Alec fell to his knees, drawing emotion and support from Isabelle, Jace and Clary. They joined him at his side while they watched the chaos and destruction in the city come to an end. The demons were taken out and the rift was soon closed. With the city-destroying danger taken care of, Alec was still left crushed by Magnus' sacrifice to get it done.
