GayTV Recap: Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (Episode 3x15)
The love story between Alec and Magnus experienced some advancement in this week's episode of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. After bartering to get his magic powers back, Magnus (played by Harry Shum Jr.) found himself without his lavish apartment, bunking with his boyfriend Alec (played by Matthew Daddario) at the Shadowhunters Institute. When Alec suggested they get breakfast with everyone else, Magnus brought up the fact that Alec was breaking institute rules by letting Magnus stay there. Alec slyly reminded him that as head of the institute he could bend the rules, since Magnus was only visiting.
The couple arrived at the Institute cafeteria where Magnus was instantly met with awkward stares from the other Shadowhunters, including Underhill (played by Steve Byers). Magnus suggested they go out for breakfast, but Alec played it cool. The two joined Alec's sister Isabelle and their friends Clary & Jace, who were all surprised to see Magnus. He explained his temporary lack of housing and they welcomed him, despite the cold eyes staring at him from elsewhere. When Magnus used his powers to upgrade his breakfast, he experienced some mysterious pain, which he hid from Alec's view.
Alec tended to his duties, giving orders to a Shadowhunter team to bring in some rogue vampires. Underhill was among the group, listening. When Alec mentioned bringing them in by the book, Underhill made a quiet comment about Alec's choices of which rules to follow. Later, Underhill assisted Magnus with getting set up at the Institute, providing him with keys to the place. Sensing Underhill's negative attitude, Magnus asked him if he had done something to offend him.
Underhill revealed that he was among those that didn't think Magnus moving into the institute was a good thing, given their rules. Magnus quickly told him that his stay was only temporary. This seemed to instantly ease Underhill's attitude. He apologized for the misunderstanding and told Magnus he didn't actually have any personal problem with him. He brought up Alec confiding him about their recent problems and how he was glad to see they had worked things out. This immediately annoyed Magnus, who excused himself.
Magnus went to see Alec, who asked how his first day at the institute was going. Magnus showed off his new keys and mentioned how he learned Alec had been talking about their relationship to a handsome man. When Alec realized he meant Underhill, Magnus shared his discomfort with Alec venting about their relationship problems publicly. Alec told him that he had a right to discuss his problems with people, though he didn't mention Underhill's homosexuality. Realizing Magnus was jealous, Alec became very happy to call him out on it. Magnus refused to admit that, disputing he could ever be jealous, but Alec wouldn't let it go.
Their banter was soon interrupted by a phone call from daylighter Simon, looking to secure their assistance. They headed off to the hospital where Simon hoped Magnus would be able to revive a young woman to help him solve a mystery. Magnus put his powers to work, successfully healing the girl. This caused him to again experience a major pain, which he again hid from Alec, who was happy to see Magnus back doing what he loved, using his power to help people.
At the end of the day, Magnus arrived to see Alec in his office at his request. Magnus apologized for implying that Alec didn't have a right to talk about his problems with other people. Alec revealed that he called him there to break the news that he was going to have to ask Magnus not to stay at the institute any longer. He told Magnus that he wasn't being a good leader by breaking institute rules and he wanted to do what was right for everyone. Though he appeared disappointed, Magnus told Alec that he completely understood his decision.
When Magnus mentioned speeding up his search to find a new place, Alec told him that there was no rule that demanded the head of the institute actually live in the institute. Magnus looked confused, until Alec suggested that they find a place to move into together. Magnus was very happy to agree to that but before the two could share a kiss, Magnus experienced another wave of pain, growing more intense, as blood came out of his nose and mouth. He fell into Alec's panicked arms as he began to have a seizure and Alec called for help as the episode ended.
