GayTV Recap: Grey's Anatomy (Episode 15x14)
The gays of Grey's Anatomy were inseparable in this week's episode, as the characters got some focus in a minor storyline. Dr. Nico Kim (played by Alex Landi) and Dr. Levi Schmitt (played by Jake Borelli) had some playful banter in their first scene, as Schmitt assumed Nico was inviting him to breakfast, only to discover that he was giving him a pop quiz on hip replacement techniques. Schmitt was caught off-guard but quickly got onboard, answering Nico's questions about the hip replacement process.
Nico was impressed with Schmitt's knowledge of the process, as he hoped he might join him for a planned hip surgery that morning. He also looked to make things up to Schmitt when it came to the breakfast mix-up. He suggested a breakfast date for later in the week, which Schmitt quickly agreed to, offering to make french toast.
The duo headed to the emergency room to find Nico's surgical mentor Linc (played by Chris Carmack). Nico told him about his plan to use Schmitt as his intern for the hip surgery, but Linc put a quick stop to that. He showed support for their new relationship, but thought it was distracting them, as they failed to notice the wave of patients flooding into the hospital after an opiod overdose crisis. He revealed he postponed the hip surgery, but had a patient with two broken arms that needed Nico's skills. He agreed to let Schmitt assist with that. Schmitt quickly promised Linc that he wouldn't let him down.
Nico & Schmitt got the patient into the operating room and Nico found it hard to understand a person who would break both arms just to get her hands on some drugs. Schmitt revealed to him that he understood being willing to break bones to get what you feel is most important. He relayed a story from his childhood about how he broke both arms after crashing his bike while rushing to get a coveted comic book, because at the time it seemed like the most important thing in the world.
Nico hoped that the injury might encourage the woman to get clean. It was then that Schmitt realized Nico was quickly done with the procedure, despite their conversation, which had been taking up his attention. He found himself amazed at Nico's skills in the surgery.
While they were getting cleaned up after the surgery, Schmitt applauded Nico's skills as a surgeon, telling him about how he's always been distracted by how good-looking Nico is that he never really thought about how great he is at his job too. Nico thanked him for the compliments.
Schmitt revealed that he was in awe of Nico and wanted to be as good as him at what he does. Nico told him that he will be, as long as he keeps getting better. Before leaving, he whispered to Schmitt that he thinks Schmitt is great at a lot of things. Left alone, Schmitt professed that his life has gotten so much better than comic books.
