GayTV Recap: Kung Fu (Ep. 2x10)
After the previous episode's cliffhanger shooting, Episode 10 of the second season of The CW drama Kung Fu began with the show's gay character Ryan (played by Jon Prasida) being rushed to the hospital. Ryan was wheeled into the hospital just as his worried parents, Mei-Li & Jin, arrived looking to find out information on their son. Mei-Li happened to look through the emergency room glass door, seeing her injured son on the other side, causing her more emotional distress.
Ryan was rushed into surgery to repair the damage from his gun shot wound as his sister, leading lady Nicky, arrived explaining to her parents how Ryan was shot after Nicky asked him to keep an eye on their troubled cousin Mia. Mei-Li chastised her daughter for putting her younger brother in a dangerous situation. Nicky was left devastated by what was happening, as the family worried about Ryan's condition.
The emergency room doctor arrived in the waiting room, telling the family that she had repaired the gun shot wound. However, there had been serious damage done to Ryan's right lung as a result of his injury. She told the worried family that he was still unconscious and it would be a waiting game to figure out his recovery. The family gathered in his room and Nicky swore to her mother that she would find Mia and make Russell Tan pay for shooting Ryan. Mei-Li snapped at her daughter, choosing to focus on her son. This led Nicky & Ryan's older sister Althea to suggest Nicky leave the hospital for now.
Later, Jin & Mei-Li remained at Ryan's bedside in his hospital room. Mei-Li told Jin that she had tried so hard to loosen her grip on her children, but she feared that she went too far, allowing them to put themselves in danger. She said that this was her fault. With Althea listening at the door, Jin told her that Ryan was going to be okay, but she told him that none of them could really know that.
Sometime later, Ryan's secret boyfriend Sebastian (played by JB Tadena) came running into the hospital, going right into the hospital room. He was so upset at seeing the unconscious Ryan lying in the bed that he didn't notice Mei-Li and Jin sitting in the room. They immediately wondered why Sebastian, who works as a chef in their family-owned restaurant, was there at the hospital.
Sebastian tried to reign in his emotions, telling them that he just wanted to check on the family but he would get back to the restaurant. Seeing the sadness on his face, and then looking back at Ryan, Mei-Li quickly put the pieces together. In that moment, she & Jin both realized Sebastian's connection to Ryan and Mei-Li told him that he wasn't leaving. She took his hand and told him that he was right where he needed to be.
With Mei-Li, Jin & Althea resting in the room later, Sebastian sat on Ryan's bed, holding his hand. He told Ryan that when they met he wasn't looking for a relationship and wasn't even planning on staying in town for long. He said there was just something about Ryan that he couldn't let go of. He said that even though they've only known each other for a few months, he really needs him. He said he felt like they were just getting started, so he really needed him to wake up.
Sebastian said that he couldn't lose Ryan. Mei-Li woke up just in time to hear Sebastian reveal his love for Ryan. He began to cry, just as Ryan started to squeeze his hand. Realizing that he was beginning to wake up, Sebastian called out for the Shen family. They gathered around the hospital bed, as Ryan's eyes flickered open and he was able to say hello to them all.
With Ryan on the road to recovery, he wondered why his mother was fluffing his pillow for the third time. His father Jin told him that it was just the beginning. He had a lot of recovery time coming. Mei-Li said that he was going to spend that time recovering with them at home. Before Ryan could object, his mother urged him not to protest. He shrugged them off and looked over to Sebastian, who smiled at him.
Nicky then arrived, happy to see that Ryan was going to be okay. Her sister Althea grabbed her hand, pulling her closer to the family. Ryan joked that not many people can say they've been shot by an evil billionaire. The others laughed, as Nicky still appeared upset. She then eyed Sebastian, who revealed that Ryan had filled him in on everything involving the family, leading her to smile. Ryan then told Nicky and his mother that what happened to him wasn't Nicky's fault and it wasn't Mia's fault either. He told Nicky how scared their estranged cousin was after he got shot, which caused her to run away. He told Nicky that they couldn't give up on her, since she was family too.
