GayTV Recap: Good Sam (Episodes 1x10-1x11)
The CBS medical drama Good Sam has begun a new story arc for gay doctor Joey (played by Davi Santos) and his fiancé, paramedic Tim (played by Stephen Tracey). After Tim's dangerous time in the field during the snowstorm back in Episode 9, Joey began Episode 10 looking to waste no more time when it came to their love. He found Tim at the hospital and suggested that they not wait to get married, taking Tim by surprise. He told him how terrifying it was not knowing if he would ever see Tim again during the storm.
Wanting to cherish all of their time together and forgo anymore bickering over wedding arrangements, Joey proposed that they get married today. Tim was shocked at the notion, but Joey said that he would take care of everything. His pushing led Tim to agree, putting a smile on Joey's face. The two shared a kiss, as Joey mentioned having to get back to his rounds but promising that he would make it happen. Joey left and Tim's smile appeared to fade when he was left alone.
Joey joined his colleagues on Chief Surgeon Sam's team as they met with a cancer patient, who was going to require her lung be removed. Joey appeared to take a back seat to his colleagues Caleb (played by Michael Stahl-David) and Isan (played by Omar Maskati) as they jockeyed for the opportunity to assist Sam with the surgery. She told them that it was a very delicate procedure and they should all be studying up on it. The three walked away and Isan couldn't help but notice Joey not seeming very interested in the surgery. He then revealed to them that he was focusing on his relationship and not worrying about this case because he was determined to focus his skills on plastic surgery. Isan teased that the chief of plastics still didn't know his name.
Later, Joey blindfolded Tim with his hands as he escorted him to the hospital's worship room. Tim joked that it must be a trust exercise. Joey then revealed that it would be the location of their wedding ceremony, again taking Tim by surprise. Joey told him that he wasn't quite done with decorations, but it would be perfect and Tim's favorite cake was on the way. Tim was surprised Joey got his favorite lemon chocolate cake since he hates it. Joey responded that he loved Tim and he wanted it to be perfect and that was all that mattered.
Unable to stay quiet any longer, Tim told Joey that he was moving so fast that Tim had to tell him something before they got married. Joey listened as Tim revealed that he slept with someone else. Joey was stunned to hear that. Tim told him that it happened just before they got engaged and it didn't mean anything. He told Joey that he loved him and wanted to marry him, but he needed him to know. A stone-faced Joey said that now he knows, before walking away angrily, leaving the saddened Tim behind.
Joey rejoined the medical team, studying up on the lung procedure with Isan while Sam & Caleb talked nearby about another case where they found their child patient wasn't matching his father's DNA profile after both ended up in the hospital during the snowstorm. Sam brought up the wife potentially having an affair. Isan made an off-hand comment about not trusting a partner who cheats on you which hit home for Joey in that moment. Joey was annoyed that Isan was placing some blame on the husband who couldn't be psychic. Isan then said that people who cheat are likely unhappy with their relationship, which further angered Joey who urged Isan to keep his opinions to himself, given his lack of a dating life.
Later, Joey remained quietly emotional when Isan approached him about his lack of interest in one of their cases, suggesting that Joey was annoyed that Sam chose him to assist on the lung surgery, instead of Joey. The annoyed Joey told him that had nothing to do with it. Isan continued to prod, saying that it was Joey that always claimed this was a competition. He reminded Joey of how long it had been since he was in the operating room, leading Joey to lash out, telling Isan that if he wanted that surgery, he would have it. Isan disputed that before walking away. This left Joey even more angry.
Joey sought out Dr. Glass, the head of plastic surgery as she checked on a patient. He took the opportunity to let her know that plastic surgery was where he wanted to focus and he was available if she needed assistance. Dr. Glass quickly brought up his record in the operating room, urging him to focus on understanding how things worked through actions, not words. This interaction left Joey feeling even more angry and frustrated.
Joey went to the ambulance bay where Tim was sitting inside one of the ambulances. Overflowing with emotion, Joey told Tim that he knew his job was a competition. He put in so much hard work and fought for his spot and whenever he needed to know what he was fighting for, he would look to Tim. He said that now he didn't know where to look. Joey said that he might have been taking too much for granted. Maybe he hadn't been fighting hard enough. Tim said he didn't have to fight for him because he was right there. The angry Joey then looked Tim in the eye and said he wasn't talking about him. He walked away, leaving Tim saddened once again.
Joey went to check on the cancer patient, talking to her about her upcoming lung removal surgery. She mentioned that Isan had been there and talked her through the procedure. Joey nonchalantly mentioned that it was good that Isan was getting a second chance after his last patient died in surgery. The woman became unsettled hearing that and wondered if it was the same procedure. Joey assured her that it was not. He then mentioned that the patient actually died during a much simpler procedure.
Later, Joey was back in the worship room pulling down the decorations he had put up for his wedding. Isan appeared at the door with the cake, telling him it had been delivered. Joey rolled his eyes, mentioning that he forgot about that. He walked over to Isan who then purposely dropped the cake on Joey's feet, catching him off-guard. The angry Isan said that he knew what Joey did, stealing his surgery. Joey grew more furious, saying that he didn't steal anything. He said that the patient changed her mind after she learned the truth about him. Isan said that he heard Joey's wedding had been called off. He didn't know or really care why, but he told Joey that Tim really dodged a bullet. He walked away leaving Joey even more pissed.
Episode 11 began with Joey in the hospital gift shop with Sam & Caleb as they searched for a card to celebrate their mentor, and Sam's father, Griff getting his medical credentials restored and likely returning to his job as hospital chief which Sam had assumed after his injury. They couldn't find anything appropriate for the occasion, while Joey mentioned he could use a condolence card, given the death of his relationship. Sam wondered if he had talked to Tim, which Joey denied. He asked about Sam & Caleb's happy coupling, causing both of them to dispute being a couple. Caleb said labels complicate things. Joey retorted that cheating on someone before you agree to marry them also complicates things. Caleb then handed Joey a card, urging him to hang in there.
Caleb later joined Joey & Sam, showing her the balloons that he found for
her. They mentioned that Sam was leaving her post gracefully and did a great
job as chief. Sam said things had been pretty great around there, despite new (true) rumors of the hospital being sold. Joey agreed it was great until he found out his fiancé was a lying cheater. Sam
comforted him again as Isan appeared, agreeing that it sucks when someone
you're supposed to trust backstabs you. He again called out Joey for stealing
his surgery, leading Sam to try to calm him down. Isan accused her of picking
sides, but Sam said that's not what she was doing. Joey again brought up the
patient changing her mind after learning Joey killed a patient. Sam stepped
between them, urging them to put their issues aside because they had a new
case, a double living lung transplant to handle today and she needed all hands
on deck.
Meanwhile, the group's colleague and friend Lex was working down in the emergency room after switching her medical focus away from surgery. She reported for duty with Dr. Eric Kace (played by Travis Van Winkle) who gave her a rundown on the ER head, Dr. Vega, who she would be meeting for the first time. Eric told her that the man wasn't fond of small talk or feelings, leaving her unimpressed. Tim arrived with an emergency patient for them, leading them to spring into action, attending to a man with an eye injury after taking a fall.
Upstairs, Sam met with the patients, a pair of best friends, who would be taking part in the live double lung surgery, joined by Joey, Caleb & Isan. Joey was annoyed as Isan noticeably stepped in front of him to address the patient. The plans for surgery became complicated when Joey noticed that the donor was running a fever, which meant that the surgery would have to be postponed until they could get her normalized. Joey later went to the supply room, working on prep for the case, when Isan walked by and then blocked the door, preventing him from leaving.
Isan wondered if Joey was trash-talking him to more patients. Joey said he was running blood work, doing his job, given that they would all be on this surgery. Isan said he wasn't doing the surgery with Joey until he owned up to what he did. Joey said again that he didn't steal his surgery. The patient changed her mind when she found out he killed a patient. Joey suggested that if Isan didn't want people to know the truth, which wasn't a secret, then he should work harder not to kill patients. This led Isan to lash out, shoving Joey. Sam arrived to see the scuffle, and broke it up, demanding that they both control themselves and stay focused on the two patients. Isan refused to work with Joey, but Sam wouldn't accept that, saying that she was not going to be short-staffed on this major surgery because of their personal issues.
Later, down in the ER, Lex noticed Joey's shoes lurking behind a curtain and she walked over to expose him, wondering what he was doing down there. Joey said that he came to wish his dear friend Lex luck on her first day after switching to the ER. Lex reminded him that it was her second day and they weren't that dear. He then asked if she had seen Tim. Lex admitted she had, while they were doing their jobs. She closed the curtain to get him alone, before saying that she heard about what happened. Joey then confided in her that he hadn't been speaking to Tim, but he had found himself following his almost every move, which had actually led to him almost crashing a Segway that morning when he followed him on his run. Lex showed him some empathy, but warned him that his behavior was not good and that he should probably talk to Tim.
Joey returned to his work, as Sam's team tried to figure out the cause of the symptoms exhibited by their lung donor patient and how she might have gotten an infection. Isan snuck in a dig at Joey's personal drama, saying that she could be suffering from an STD, given that she admitted to making out with a random guy. He wondered if it was more than kissing. Joey looked annoyed. Joey then mentioned meningitis as a possibility and Sam ordered a spinal tap to check for that. Isan quickly volunteered to administer it, causing Joey to be annoyed. He reminded her that it was his suspicion and he should do it. This led to another argument with Sam again in the middle, trying to remind them that they are all on the same team.
After figuring out the problem and stabilizing the donor, the group headed into surgery. Joey assisted Griff with transplanting the lung into the recipient, while Sam & Isan worked on removal of the organ from the donor. Joey mentioned that he was glad he noticed the donor's fever when he did, leading Isan to wonder if he wanted a round of applause for taking a temperature. Joey retorted that it was more than Isan did. Sam then confronted both of them, saying that she had enough. She chastised Joey for going to a patient and revealing sensitive information, weaponizing Isan's mistake for his own benefit. She then chastised Isan for going too far in playing the victim.
They both apologized for their recent unprofessional behavior. Joey then said that he hoped to do better with the new chief, after the hospital sale rumors circulated. Griff revealed that he was actually still going to be chief. This caused Isan more anger as he realized Sam lied to him about the hospital sale and a potentially different chief cleaning house on their program during an earlier conversation. Sam had no answer for him and he left in the middle of the surgery, shocking them. Sam called on Caleb to step in to assist her.
Later, Joey was shown leaving the hospital on his phone, leaving a message for Isan. He said he never saw him walk out on a surgery before. He told Isan that it might not feel that way right now, but he reminded him that they were really on the same team. This was overheard by Tim who was approaching the hospital entrance. He wondered if that was the case for them too. Joey said that he really didn't know. Tim asked if there was any way they could please get past this. Joey told him that he wasn't ready to do that. Tim told him that he understood but he would be waiting for him, however long it took. Joey then walked away.
Back inside the hospital, Lex was winding down after her long day in the ER, with the aggressive Dr. Vega. She thanked Eric for his help in backing her up earlier in the day, with their ER patient. Eric accepted her thanks, before telling her he might need a little help himself. She wondered what he meant. He looked around to make sure that no one else in the ER was around. He then confided in her that he was feeling really bad about the whole Tim thing. Lex looked confused. Eric then revealed that he never thought a casual hookup would lead to such a mess. Lex then realized that it was Eric that Tim had slept with. Before Eric could say anymore, he was called away, leaving her stunned.
