This week's episode of the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy featured a crossover with its sister series Station 19. The episode provided a historic event for the two series, as their two regular gay male characters interacted with one another for the very first time. Pleasantly, the sexuality of the two men never came up during their interactions. Senior resident Dr. Levi Schmitt (played by Jake Borelli) was present with his mentors Dr. Bailey & Dr. Webber after tremors were felt throughout the hospital. They watched the news report that a pipeline explosion had caused the tremors throughout Seattle. Bailey worked to get through to her husband, firefighter Ben, worried that his station might have been responding to the initial gas leak before the explosion. Dr. Hunt then rallied the staff, calling on Schmitt to begin preparing for incoming injuries.
Firefighters Andy & Travis (played by
Jay Hayden) arrived at the hospital later, reuniting with Ben (played by
Jason George) and Bailey, who revealed to them that their fellow firefighter Dean Miller
had died from his injuries in the explosion. They were crushed, as Ben
comforted them. Travis then realized that his best friend, the injured Vic,
was not aware of Miller's death, given her own injuries. He explained that he
had to tell her as soon as possible, given her close relationship with Miller.
Bailey agreed to take him to the emergency room.
In the emergency room, Schmitt was supervising one of the other residents as she ran tests on Vic. It was then that Vic remembered Schmitt for bringing her flowers at the fire station after her fiancé Ripley died after collapsing at a flower shop with Schmitt. He let her know that he was now a senior resident and acting trauma chief. Travis then arrived, immediately taking her hand. In a happy mood thanks to her meds, Vic wondered why Travis looked so upset as she joked about her condition and Miller having told her that he was in love with her back at the scene of the explosion. Sensing he had bad news to share, Schmitt made a quick exit with his fellow resident.
Travis told Vic that there had been another explosion after she had been taken from the scene. She could sense that something bad was coming. With Ben & Bailey watching from outside, Travis sat down next to Vic and told her that Miller didn't make it. This sent her into a spiral of emotion. Things then took a drastic turn as her heart stopped, leading to a medical emergency. Travis immediately began doing chest compressions, as he screamed for help.
Schmitt rushed in with Bailey to work on triage, as Ben pulled Travis out of the way. They watched in horror as Bailey demanded that Vic start breathing, noting that her family could not lose her now. Schmitt worked on providing her oxygen, as the resuscitation paddles were implemented to get her heart going again. Schmitt breathed an audible sigh of relief as his patient was brought back from the brink of death.
The doctors discussed next steps in Vic's treatment, including more tests as her heart appeared to be damaged when she was electrocuted on duty. Bailey allowed Travis to come back in, as Vic woke up. He made her promise never to scare him like that again. Seeing Ben there, she wondered if what he told her about Miller was real. She then realized upon seeing their faces that she hadn't been dreaming. Travis stayed by her side to comfort her as she broke down in tears.
Later, after Vic had been moved to a room, Travis walked out into the
hallway where Schmitt was looking through Vic's records and results. Seeing his emotion on his face, Schmitt asked if he was okay. Travis admitted he wasn't okay. He asked
Schmitt how Vic was doing. Schmitt explained to him that her symptoms in the
ER appeared a lot like a heart attack. Seeing how emotional Travis was,
Schmitt also reminded him that she is young and strong and her test results
are looking better. Schmitt was optimistic that she would be okay.
Travis peeked in at Vic and then told Schmitt that she might recover
physically, but emotionally he knew that she was not going to be okay. He wasn't
sure that she would be able to truly deal with Miller's death, after going
through such a loss before with Ripley. Schmitt listened intently as Travis explained that Miller was like a
brother to them, but his relationship with Vic was still something even
deeper.
Travis continued to break down emotionally, as he confided in Schmitt that he knew what she was going to be going through and the thought of that was something that he hated. He said he couldn't imagine her having to go through such loss again. His tears began to flow. Schmitt left his work station behind to move closer to Travis, offering some silent support.
In their final scene of the episode, Travis was shown asleep at Vic's bedside, along with her boyfriend Theo and their comrade Andy while Ben & Bailey stood outside the room, having taken custody of Miller's toddler daughter. They left with the little girl, revealing Schmitt at the nurse's station, keeping a watchful eye on the exhausted, grieving firefighters.
