This week's episode of the FOX medical drama The Resident put some focus on recurring character Dr. Jake Wong (played by How to Get Away with Murder's Conrad Ricamora). The episode began with Jake welcoming his former stepfather, Dr. Randolph Bell (played by cast member Bruce Greenwood), to a friendly dinner as Randolph continued to try to make amends with Jake for abandoning him as a child. Randolph brought along his fellow surgeon, and new hospital CEO, Kitt and they got a tour of Jake's house with his husband Gregg (played by Christopher J. Hanke), which included the nursery they were planning to utilize for their upcoming adoption.
Jake showed off the changing table that Gregg made by hand, showing his pride in his hubby. Trying to make nice, Randolph wondered if there was anything he could get for them. Jake dismissed his gesture, saying that the baby was set to arrive in six weeks. Gregg said that Jake had been planning since the moment they found out about the baby from the adoption agency. Hearing the food timer, they all headed off to the kitchen, though Randolph lagged behind, taking a look around the nursery, as feelings of family stayed on his mind.
The next day at the hospital, leading man Conrad (played by Matt Czuchry) dealt with an incoming pregnant girl named Tina Miller, who was in distress. He checked on her condition, and her baby, seeing that the baby's heartbeat was strong. When he asked if there was someone he could call for her, Randolph appeared, identifying her, which confused Conrad, especially when Tina revealed she didn't know him. Then, Jake & Gregg arrived, revealing that Tina was having the baby that the couple was planning to adopt. Jake introduced Tina to his stepfather and she thanked him for raising a good son.
Tina said that she'd done lots of bad things but the best thing she did was picking Jake & Gregg to be her baby's parents. Jake dismissed that, trying to calm her. He said that she was doing all of the hard work. They worked on her breathing, as Randolph inquired with Conrad about her condition. Jake wondered how far apart her contractions were. Conrad then revealed to all of them that Tina was not having contractions. Her medical issues were something else, which immediately drew their further concern for Tina and her unborn baby.
Gregg quickly felt out of his element as Jake & Randolph began discussing among themselves what Tina's symptoms could be pointing to. He hoped for someone to speak in layman's terms. Conrad then revealed that his scans showed that Tina had gallstones which were causing an infection in her gallbladder. That made sense for Jake & Randolph, as they went through her symptoms and began thinking of a potential treatment plan.
The plan to treat Tina's gallbladder, however, soon presented a new problem because any surgical procedure during pregnancy could cause complications and danger for the unborn child. When they discussed using antibiotics to treat the pain of the infection in order to postpone the surgery until the baby could be born, they realized that could risk Tina's life. As Tina grew more worried, Conrad took control, telling her that he would explain her options so she could make an informed decision. Jake & Gregg assured her that they would be there for her, no matter what she decided. They asked about contacting her parents, but Tina didn't want them involved, saying she could make her own choice given that, at 19, she's an adult.
Later, Tina's condition worsened. With antibiotics not working, she was prepared for surgery. Kitt joined Jake & Gregg as they got off the elevator with Tina and the staff, headed for the operating room. Jake filled her in on what was happening. They met up with Randolph, who was ready to perform the surgery. Jake assured Tina that he & Gregg would be waiting for her when she got out of surgery. Randolph assured Jake that she was in good hands. Kitt then suggested Jake & Gregg come with her to get some fresh air while they waited.
While sitting outside the hospital, Kitt asked them about Tina's parents and whether they should call them. Jake & Gregg revealed to her that they didn't know much about them because Tina never brought them up. They wondered if she had ever told them she was pregnant and thought that might be why she didn't want them there. Kitt said that she couldn't imagine her children not wanting to tell her if they were in trouble. Gregg said that Tina was an adult, so they had to obey her wishes. He wondered why things were taking so long. Jake said that no news could be a good thing. Kitt agreed to go and check on an update, leaving the couple outside, holding hands.
Kitt returned later, revealing that there had been complications and Tina
coded in the operating room, forcing an emergency c-section to remove the
baby. She explained that Randolph had managed to save Tina and that she was
recovering in the ICU. She then revealed to the worried couple that they also
have a beautiful baby girl doing well. They were thrilled as she gave them
congratulations, confirming that both Tina and the baby were okay. Jake &
Gregg shared a happy hug, as they realized that everything had worked out.
Jake & Gregg were next seen in the NICU, holding their newborn daughter.
They took in the experience with smiles on their faces while Randolph &
Kitt watched. He wondered if she would ever realize how lucky she is. Kitt
remarked that kids never really do. Jake & Gregg introduced them to baby
Lucy. Kitt then teased that Randolph was a grandfather now. He smiled, telling
her that he actually liked that. Back in the NICU, Jake & Gregg locked
fingers as they held the baby.
Later, Randolph checked out Tina, seeing that her recovery was coming along well, as Jake & Gregg stood by. Tina then panicked when she got a text message from her parents, revealing they learned of her hospitalization and were on their way into the hospital. Jake tried to calm her, wondering, if she had told them about the pregnancy. Tina said they knew. They were very upset. Randolph figured she was exaggerating, but she said that she wasn't. The only way she could get them not to disown her was to tell them that she was giving the baby up to a traditional family, making things instantly uncomfortable in the room.
Realizing that it was them that Tina hadn't told her parents about, Randolph said that her parents might be just fine with Jake & Gregg. Tina, however, disagreed. She panicked, saying that they would never accept this. She urged one of the guys to leave and for the other to pretend to be straight, just until her parents left. Jake told her that growing up in the south was extremely difficult for him, and finding his life and being open with his love was not something he was willing to hide. He joined hands with Gregg, saying they weren't going to start their daughter's life off with a lie. There was nothing to hide.
Tina's parents arrived in the room, glad to see she was okay. She introduced them to Randolph and they thanked him for saving their daughter's life. He told her parents that she was a real fighter. They then noticed Jake & Gregg holding hands and wondered who they were. Randolph told them that they were the adoptive fathers. This left the parents speechless. They said that they couldn't let them have this baby. Tina told them what great people Jake & Gregg were and how they've been with her through her pregnancy. She told them that they had already named her.
The parents said that they didn't agree with the lifestyle that Jake & Gregg chose, which Gregg quickly corrected, telling them that they didn't choose anything. Jake agreed, saying they were just like her daughter, born who they are. He said that Tina was perfect. The parents did not receive their words well, telling them that Tina didn't share their values, which they hoped would change when she matures. They then presented an ultimatum, saying that if she went through with this adoption, she would be kicked out of their family.
Looking to help, Randolph stepped in, telling Tina's parents that they missed the miracle that happened today, the one that they all witnessed. He told them that Jake & Gregg held that child for the first time and what he witnessed was nothing but love. Randolph appealed to the parents, certain that they remembered what it was like to hold Tina for the first time. He said that this baby had two loving parents that wanted her and were ready to take her home and be a family. Jake watched him closely, as he said this was all about love. He knew it was there and wasn't that the most important thing.
In their final scene, it was revealed that the baby was returned to the adoption agency so that it could be placed with a "traditional" family, leaving Jake & Gregg heartbroken. They sat with Randolph & Kitt, who wondered if there was anything that could be done. Jake said there wasn't. It was over. Gregg then reminded him that their baby was still out there. They just haven't met him or her yet. He put an arm around Jake, as Randolph watched his stepson sit in sadness, feeling some of his pain.
