GayTV Recap: Grey's Anatomy (Episode 16x10)

Episode 10 of the sixteenth season of Grey's Anatomy explored the medical fallout at the hospital after a car crashed into the nearby bar in the previous episode, putting the lives of the hospital's notable group of interns in danger. Levi Schmitt (played by Jake Borelli), the only intern seemingly left uninjured thanks to being ostracized by his fellow interns for reporting the discrepancy that led to the firing of beloved doctor Meredith Grey, arrived at the hospital in an ambulance tending to his best friend Taryn. His boyfriend Nico (played by Alex Landi) arrived in another ambulance tending to another of the interns, having also escaped the bar disaster unscathed.

After assessing the situation, Chief Bailey found herself struggling physically after her recent miscarriage and ducked into a supply room. She then heard Schmitt's sniffling and found him in a panic over the fates of his friends. Bailey immediately wondered if he might have been hurt at the bar, but he told her he wasn't. She told him they were both fighting emotions right now but they needed to set them aside to help his friends. She offered a hand, pulling him to his feet and telling him to keep moving.

Schmitt joined Bailey as they went to check on Taryn, only for him to become instantly uncomfortable seeing Meredith in the room. He told Bailey the room seemed pretty crowded and he didn't want to be in the way, but Bailey urged him to keep moving forward. He listened nervously as a groggy Taryn explained her own condition as the doctors worked on her. She remarked that she was so happy to have Meredith helping her.

In the operating room, Meredith worked on getting Taryn ready for surgery, with Schmitt's help while Nico scrubbed with Linc in preparation for Taryn's leg surgery. In her groggy state, Taryn professed her love for Meredith, catching her off-guard. She told Schmitt to prep Taryn for surgery, but Taryn said she didn't want him anywhere near her because he got Meredith fired. Schmitt grew even more upset and clutched his chest. Meredith said that Nico would handle the prep, but Taryn called him a traitor-lover, making Schmitt more upset. He then collapsed, shocking Meredith. Nico & Linc rushed in to check on Schmitt.

Later, Schmitt woke up in a hospital bed himself, wondering what happened. Meredith revealed to him that he fainted. He figured he was having a heart attack, but she ruled that out, telling him that he needed to calm down. He was surprised that she would help him after he fainted, given what he did. She told him that she would never do that. She asked if there was anyone she could call for him, but he told her he couldn't contact his mother who would definitely have a heart attack if she heard. He couldn't call Taryn because she was dying in the operating room and he couldn't call Nico because he was trying to save Taryn's life. Meredith urged him to relax, assuring him that she was there for him.

Meanwhile in the operating room, Nico worked with his mentor Linc on Taryn's leg injury. Linc announced that they were almost done and he offered to let Nico leave early to go check on Schmitt. Nico was a bit offended, reminding his superior that he was assigned to work on Taryn and that's what he was going to do. He then confided in Linc that pausing to freak out about Schmitt wasn't going to help Schmitt and he'd rather ensure that Schmitt's best friend Taryn made it through. At that moment, Taryn's vitals started to crash, sending them into crisis mode, calling for Bailey.

Bailey arrived and Linc & Nico quickly ran down Taryn's condition, with Nico telling Bailey that she appeared hypertensive. Bailey did a quick exam and, realizing that Taryn needed immediate surgery, took her out of their orthopedic hands. With Meredith off attending to Schmitt, Dr. Webber stepped in offering to help, reminding Bailey that he hired this group of interns and he wasn't going anywhere.

Worried about the potential of cardiomyopathy in Schmitt, Meredith called on Dr. Altman to take a look. A groggy Schmitt reminded Meredith that she should hate him so much. She urged him to keep still and relax for the procedure. He then apologized repeatedly to her. Meredith told him that she forgave him. She has her license back and her job back. They're good. He then wondered if he was dying. Dr. Altman told him that wasn't the case. She found no blockages around his heart. She deduced that he was suffering from Broken Heart Syndrome. His symptoms were caused by heightened stress. Meredith joked about Schmitt never ever being stressed, getting him to smile. She told Schmitt that she was glad he was okay.

The next morning Schmitt woke up in his hospital room to find Nico asleep in the chair next to the bed. Nico woke up and Schmitt told him his heart broke. Nico told him that he had the same thing. They shared a smile. Nico told Schmitt that Taryn pulled through and Schmitt was eager to go see her. Nico told him he could, in a few minutes. He then crawled into bed, cuddling up to Schmitt and holding him close, bringing another smile of relief from Schmitt as he closed his eyes.

Nico wheeled Schmitt into Taryn's room and he found her resting. Schmitt told her that he would understand if she didn't want to see him, but Taryn told him that she forgave him too. She said he was her best friend and she couldn't make it at the hospital without him. Schmitt said the same was true for him.

They held hands, as Taryn expressed some jealousy at Schmitt's romance, remembering that she expressed her love for Meredith while groggy in the operating room. Schmitt assured her she would find someone. After all, it took him his entire life to find Nico. While Nico said he was amazing, he also admitted he was no Meredith Grey. Taryn agreed.
