GayTV Recap: This Close (Episode 2x1)
The Sundance TV original comedy This Close has returned for its second season. The series follows deaf best friends Kate and Michael (played by Joshua Feldman) as they navigate life and love in Los Angeles. Episode 2x1 picked up right where the Season 1 finale left off, after an argument between the friends led to Michael being hit by a car. Paramedics arrived on the scene, unaware that he's deaf. Kate rushed back to his side, seeing his arm was injured. Michael's boyfriend Ryan (played by Colt Prattes) joined them, upset to see Michael hurt. While Michael was loaded into an ambulance, Kate & Ryan bickered over who would join him inside, after both lied to the paramedics saying each was married to Michael.
Kate relented and Ryan joined Michael in the ambulance, interpreting for the paramedic as he explained that they were going to have to cut off Michael's pants. His slow signing didn't go unnoticed by Michael, as pants were soon off, revealing his animal print thong, surprising Ryan. Michael playfully revealed his surprise.
At the hospital, Ryan was by Michael's side as the nurse came in, revealing that he could not get any medicine until his blood alcohol level was lowered. Michael disputed having too much to drink. The nurse realized he was deaf and tried to explain their suspicion that he may have injured his collarbone. Ryan signed it to him, and the nurse wondered if they were family, given that visiting hours would be over soon. She warned them that the nurse coming on duty after her might not be so understanding if they were not legal partners.
Kate arrived at the hospital where her boyfriend Danny showed up, looking to mend their broken relationship. She chose to focus on Michael and joined Ryan as he tried to fill out Michael's forms while he was sleeping. They realized that Michael didn't have insurance. Ryan grew upset when Kate became adamant about peeking in on Michael, despite him being asleep. He took a seat with the forms, encountering another patient who was a female minister, offering to say a prayer if he needed it. Kate then returned, revealing that Michael was gone from his room, surprising Ryan.
Michael grew more uncomfortable as he was left alone in a hospital corridor with no one telling him where he was being taken. His new male nurse arrived, and when Michael attempted to sign his question, the nurse grew annoyed and strapped his uninjured hand down, raising Michael's discomfort as he was taken to an MRI, feeling alone as he was still unable to communicate with anyone.
Meanwhile, Ryan & Kate grilled another nurse about where Michael had been taken. She couldn't tell them. Kate grew more furious to know that an interpreter was not available at the hospital immediately. She went looking around the hospital and caught sight of Michael being moved again. She got his nurse's attention and signed to Michael that the interpreter wasn't there yet. She then demanded the nurse uncuff his hand so that he could sign back to her. Michael thanked her. They got back to his room and she filled him in on what happened with Danny. Ryan joined them and Michael explained he was taken for some tests, relieving his boyfriend.
Kate left to sort things out with Danny. Michael's annoying male nurse then returned, reminding them of visiting hours being over for non-family members. Ryan then asked Michael to marry him, shocking him. Michael reminded him that they tried being engaged before. Ryan assured him that things were different now. Plus, Michael could use his medical insurance. Ryan paid off the nurse to give them some alone time. He then told Michael that he was all-in on their relationship and not going anywhere, no matter how emotionally messed up Michael admits to being.
Kate returned, telling Michael about her blow-up with Danny, who accused her of caring more about Michael than their relationship. She went through her newfound revelation that engagement and marriage might never be the answer and that people were better off alone. At that moment, Ryan returned with the minister and Michael nervously revealed to her that they were getting married, shocking Kate. Ryan & Michael came up with spur of the moment vows, as the minister pronounced them married. They shared a kiss and Michael glanced over to Kate, only to see that she had already left.
