GayTV Recap: The InBetween (Episode 1x10)
The NBC summer series The InBetween centers on Cassie, a young woman with the ability to see and speak with the dead who are stuck between the world of the living and the afterlife. She uses her ability to help her father, Detective Tom Hackett (played by Paul Blackthorne), solve crimes with his partner, Damien. The season finale began with Cassie & Tom talking with Tom's husband Brian (played by Michael B. Silver) about Brian's upcoming operation to remove a dangerous brain tumor.
Cassie assured him that she would be at the hospital, despite the emotional overload she experiences inside hospitals. Brian made sure they knew about all of his paperwork, in case something bad happens, but Tom made it very clear that it was all going to go well. He held his husband, knowing he had to be scared. The two shared a kiss, as Cassie reminded them to continue to knock on wood that it would all work out.
After consulting with her father on his latest murder investigation at the police department, Cassie left the building and was surprised to see Brian walking towards her. She wondered what he was doing there, but he walked by with a vacant stare, without saying a word. Cassie then turned to see that he wasn't actually there. She grew terrified as she had previous experience with visions of people who would soon die.
Later, after fending off the murderer that Tom & Damien were searching for, Cassie joined her fathers at the police station, where they all tried to stay calm despite Cassie's ordeal. When Tom suggested postponing Brian's surgery, he told him that they couldn't do that. They had no choice. Cassie wondered what that meant and they explained her that Brian's brain tumor was not responding to treatment as well as the doctors had hoped and the specialist who was flying in to perform the surgery might not be available if they postponed.
Cassie was disappointed that they hadn't told her the entire story, but agreed that they had to do this now. She also kept quiet about her vision of Brian that she had earlier, choosing not to tell the two about it, not knowing if it might change their decisions for the worst. Brian looked for confirmation from a worried Tom that they were indeed going forward with the surgery and he agreed as well. Brian gave him a thankful smile.
A few hours later the trio was at the hospital and Brian was prepped for surgery. As he was being wheeled out, he told them both that he would see them in about ten hours after the surgery was done. Tom held his hand as Cassie told him that they would be right there waiting for him the whole time. Before he could be taken in, Tom asked for the nurse to wait for a minute so the family could share a final moment together.
Tom took a moment to whisper something in Brian's ear, before the two shared a kiss. As Brian was then wheeled into the operating room, he and Cassie both professed their love. Tom then did the same, which left Brian with a smile on his face, as the doors closed. Left alone, Tom & Cassie embraced as they prepared for the long wait ahead.
Several hours later, Tom & Cassie continued their wait at the hospital when they got a visit from Tom's police partner Damien, who brought food and company to provide some support. Tom thanked him for the distraction, but Cassie felt worried that they hadn't heard any news and decided to go for a walk. While saying a prayer for Brian, she was confronted with the evil spirit that had plagued her recently and had also caused the recent murders Tom was investigating. After watching the spirits of his victims vanquish him, Cassie felt some peace, only to see another vision of Brian in the hallway. She panicked when she heard his doctor being paged due to a code blue emergency in the recovery room. She rejoined Tom & Damien, learning that Brian had stopped breathing, but was being tended to by his doctor.
As they nervously waited for an update on Brian's condition, Cassie told Tom that they should have postponed the surgery and that she should have told them about her vision. Tom was caught off-guard hearing her tell him about seeing Brian, the same way she had seen Damien's wife shortly before her death. Tom took her hand, assuring her that none of this was her fault. He told her that they would have went through with the procedure anyway, even if she had said something about her vision. They were interrupted by the doctor, who told them that Brian was stabilized, though they lost him for a short moment. Tom & Cassie were thrilled and relieved to hear that the surgery was a complete success. They celebrated with Damien.
Tom & Cassie joined Brian in his hospital room, where he revealed to them both that he was eager to get back to work. They both reminded him that he still had more recovering to do. Cassie told him that he wasn't going to get many opportunities to be waited on hand-and-foot. Tom agreed, saying that Brian was going to have to take some time. In light of that, Brian suggested they make plans to take a trip together, which brought a smile to Tom's face.
