GayTV Recap: Grey's Anatomy (Episodes 15x23-15x25)

The final three episodes of Season 15 of Grey's Anatomy continued the recurring gay subplot revolving around Grey-Sloan intern Levi Schmitt (played by Jake Borelli) and surgical fellow Nico Kim (played by Alex Landi). Things picked up where Grey's sister series Station 19 left off with Levi attempting to stabilize fire chief Lucas Ripley after the two crossed paths at a flower shop where Ripley collapsed. Their ambulance arrived at the hospital at the start of Episode 15x23, and Levi was quickly informed that he had saved the life of Seattle's fire chief, shocking him, and leading him to proclaim himself a hero.

Levi went looking for Nico, finding him with a patient. He told him about his act of heroism with the fire chief, but Nico seemed disinterested, calling on Levi to help him set his patient's arms. Levi obliged, taking the time to tell him about how he crossed paths with Ripley at the flower shop, where he was looking to get flowers for Nico, as a gesture, after Nico lost a patient. He also assumed Nico would be giving him an apology for lashing out at him after the tragedy.

Nico did not give him that apology. He accused of Levi of making the situation all about him, despite Nico being the one who was going through something terrible. Levi disputed that, saying again that he was trying to be as supportive as he could. They were soon interrupted by Nico's supervisor, Linc (played by Chris Carmack) and Nico made a quick exit, which left Levi disappointed with him once again.

After checking in with the fire chief, Levi caught sight of Nico & Linc talking. As he approached, Nico made another hasty exit. Linc tried to give Levi another assignment, but he put off helping him until he could talk to Nico. Linc then told Levi that he had to give Linc some space and time. Levi assured him that he was only trying to be supportive, but Linc told him that he didn't understand what Nico was going through and what he was truly feeling after losing a patient due to his own negligence. He urged Levi to just keep his distance, leaving him saddened.

Episode 15x24 began with Levi keeping major distance from Nico, as he waited at the airport to pick-up a donor who had volunteered to make a life-saving blood donation to save a young child's life. He relayed the news to the hospital that the woman had arrived with her therapist, but things took a bad turn as the therapist was quickly detained by airport security and the severely agoraphobic woman retreated back into the plane, forcing Levi to follow.

Seeing his mission to get the woman to the hospital failing, and knowing a young boy's life was hanging in the balance, Levi reminded the woman that she had made a promise to donate her blood and she was the only matching type they could find. Her fears of the outside world, however, prevented her from moving, or leaving the plane. This led Levi to beg her to come with him to the hospital, only for her to refuse once again, causing his frustration with her to rise.

Back at the hospital, Nico's emotional struggles continued. He found himself in the operating room, working on the young boy's father who suffered a fall while at the hospital. Nico was assisted by longtime doctor, Richard Webber. When intern Taryn arrived, looking to join them for the surgery and made light of the man's butt injury, Nico lashed out at her, ordering her to cover his other patients, instead of helping with the surgery, due to her insensitivity. Dr. Webber suggested Nico had to lighten up and relax, but he quickly dismissed the former chief's advice.

Back on the plane, Levi felt relieved upon the arrival of Dr. Hunt (played by Kevin McKidd), who planned to take the woman's blood on the plane, so she wouldn't have to leave it. His plan, however, was stalled when she refused to allow him to touch her with the needle outside of the safety of the hospital. Levi snapped at the woman, causing Hunt to intervene. Levi watched as Dr. Hunt made an impassioned plea for her to gather her courage and leave with him, promising to protect her all the way to the hospital. After arranging a video call with the young boy's mother, Hunt got her to agree to leave the plane.

The trio got into the limo and headed off to the hospital, with Nico trying his best to keep the frightened woman calm, even singing along with her. The limo came to a stop on the freeway as a major fog rolled into the city, majorly decreasing visibility. The episode came to an end as the three experienced a major pileup of cars crashing all around them, leaving them all terrified for their safety.

The season finale, Episode 15x25, picked up where things left off, with Levi, Hunt and their donor Frances bracing themselves as cars crashed all around them on the freeway. Hunt went outside to check on injuries, while Levi tried his best to keep Frances calm, as her agoraphobia got the better of her. Hunt returned with a plan to keep them moving towards the hospital. Levi helped him convince the woman to be brave with them and they left the limo behind.

Back at the hospital, Linc found Nico moping in the emergency room. He gave him an assignment, to monitor Linc's paralyzed patient, who had experienced some muscle movement. He wasn't sure if she might be regaining feeling in her hands, but he needed Nico to keep a close eye on her while he tended to the influx of patients coming in from the freeway pileup. When Nico made a flippant remark about being asked to watch over a patient who couldn't move, Linc got stern with him, warning him that he had to get himself out of his slump, or he was going to throw away his fellowship before he could finish it.

Levi, Hunt & Frances hitched a ride with an ambulance. Levi tried to keep Frances calm as she felt uncomfortable witnessing the triage happening to an injured man in the vehicle. Levi took a call from the hospital, learning that the young patient that Frances was donating blood for was deteriorating rapidly. Meanwhile, Nico did his job, watching over the paralyzed patient, who again experienced muscle movement, witnessed by her daughter and intern Dahlia. While Nico observed their happiness with a bit of potential progress in her condition, he couldn't bring himself to show any emotion.

Levi, Hunt & Frances finally arrived at the hospital, greeted by Dr. Bailey and Dr. Karev, who offered to take Frances to get her blood drawn. Levi wasn't far behind, as he brought the woman some snacks and juice to help keep her stable as she donated the blood to save their young patient. She talked to them about how she felt so much fear, but it was subsiding, now that she realized how easy the process was going to be.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Nico watched in silence as Linc's paralyzed patient was visited by her team of doctors, commending her on her progress. She felt like she was experiencing a miracle, just when she was ready to give up. They all congratulated her and encouraged her to keep fighting as she was able to move her hands even more. Nico watched them all sharing their emotions and something clicked for him. He went looking for Levi, who told him that he had an exhausting day already. Nico told him that he missed him.

Levi told Nico that he realizes that his personality can sometimes be tough to take because he feels things openly and he fears lots of things openly, but he also knows what it's like to save someone's life and care about the world and he deserved better than the way Nico's been treating him. Nico agreed. He told Nico about Frances and how much she annoyed him all day because of her fears and he realized he can be annoying too, but Nico told him that he wasn't annoying. He revealed he was jealous of Levi for being so open with his feelings. He shared with him how angry he felt since he made a fatal mistake and how he had been unable to feel anything else. Levi told him that he could help him with that.

Levi took Nico to his basement bedroom in his mother's house. The two watched My Girl together, as Levi openly weeped during a tear-jerking scene. They were then joined by Levi's mother, who had brought him soup after a tough week. Levi introduced her to Nico, revealing to his mother that he was Levi's boyfriend. His mother was taken aback by the revelation, but when Levi told her that Nico had been the one having a rough time at work, she passed along the food to him, welcoming him.

She told Levi that they would talk later and she left the two alone. Nico was left feeling emotional, knowing of Levi's earlier fears of letting his mother in on their relationship. He told Levi that he was amazing. Seeing Nico finally able to shed some tears, Levi snuggled up next to him. The pair ended the season in an emotional, but happy, place with their relationship.
