GayTV Recap: Days of Our Lives (Episodes 54x144-54x150)
Will (played by Chandler Massey) and Sonny (played by Freddie Smith) continued to work through Will's medical crisis in recent weeks on Days of Our Lives. Episode 54x144 began with the couple having breakfast with Gabi and the trio's daughter Ariana ahead of the biopsy to find out if Will's brain tumor was cancerous. They all tried to put on brave faces but Ari quickly noticed something was bothering her dads.
They tried their best to explain the situation to her and told her that they were just worried about Will's doctor's appointment. Gabi suggested that Ari could make her dads feel better with a big hug. Ari obliged and Will and Sonny both put on smiles, telling her that it made them feel much better. Gabi offered to skip work to be with Ari while they were at the hospital, but they told her they had it covered with a babysitter and play date waiting at Sonny's place.
Sonny & Will got back to the Kirakis mansion and Ari gave Will one last hug before heading upstairs for her play date. Will walked into the living room, surprised to see his grandmother Kate there talking business with Sonny's uncle Victor. Kate revealed that she had been told about his biopsy by Victor's wife, Maggie, annoying her that Will hadn't told her himself. She was angry that he was shutting her out of his illness, but Will explained that he didn't want the family hovering and worrying, which Kate claimed was unavoidable. He made her promise to keep calm and keep her distance until he knew what he was really facing.
Will & Sonny got to the hospital and Will settled into a hospital bed, already impatient over how long it was taking to get to his biopsy. Sonny tried to keep him calm, encouraging him to relax. Will's thoughts turned to Ari, as he wondered if they might have scared her with their talk earlier. Sonny was sure that she was fine and reiterated how happy she was to have both her dads back. They both complimented each other on being great fathers, as they locked hands, and waited as Will experienced another headache.
They were joined by Will's uncle, and doctor, Rex (played by Kyle Lowder). He told them about the procedure that Will would be undergoing, as Sonny & Will posed questions. Rex explained that they couldn't remove the entire tumor because of it's location on Will's brain, but if it was benign, it may not require any further surgery. They were feeling encouraged and shared some final alone time before the biopsy when Will experienced a seizure, terrifying Sonny as Rex rushed to his side.
Episode 54x145 picked up right where the previous episode left off with Will having a seizure in his hospital bed. Rex forced Sonny to leave the room, making him more fearful of what was happening to Will. Rex retrieved Sonny later, allowing him to come back in. Sonny was relieved to see that Will was awake. After Sonny telling that he gave them a scare, Will wondered what happened and Rex explained about his seizure.
Sonny wondered if Rex could still do the biopsy after the seizure and Rex told him that the anti-seizure medication that he gave Will was actually a common practice before a biopsy, so they could still proceed as planned. Will was ready to head to surgery, but Sonny took some extra time with him, to remind him that everything was going to go great and he would be right there waiting for him when he was out of surgery. Will drifted off to sleep due to the anesthesia and Sonny gave him a kiss before letting him go.
Sonny was surprised to see Rex in the hallway shortly after Will was taken into the operating room. Rex explained that a specialist was handling the actual surgery, but he would keep Sonny updated. Sonny asked him about the seizure and whether it was a bad sign. Rex explained to him that whether Will's tumor was benign or malignant, he could experience similar symptoms and that there was no need for Sonny to panic. This didn't quell Sonny's fears as he was plagued by flashbacks of a previous hospital stay for Will and how scared he was at his side.
Sonny was joined by John, who revealed to him that Will's grandmother Marlena wanted to be there but had been called away by a patient. Sonny told him about the seizure that Will had before the biopsy. John offered his support, reminding Sonny that Will's family and friends weren't just there for Will, but for Sonny too, as they realized what he must be going through. He gave Sonny a supportive hug. Later, Sonny was happy to see Will after the surgery. Rex reported that things went perfectly, relieving them a bit.
Back in Will's hospital room, Sonny commented on Will being loopy from the anesthesia. He asked him how he was feeling and Will told him that he was feeling great. He said that he felt strong enough to overcome anything with Sonny by his side. Will drifted off to sleep and a worried Sonny snuggled up next to him in his bed, holding him close.
Their storyline picked up in Episode 54x150, as the couple waited patiently for the results of the biopsy. They were joined by Will's grandparents Marlena & Roman, who brought up the notion that Will should call his mother Sami and tell her about his brain tumor, but Will refused, catching them off-guard with an outburst of anger about his mother and how he didn't want her around to make things worse. Sonny tried to calm him down, but he accused all of them of conspiring behind his back.
Marlena got through to him, telling Will that this wasn't him talking and that he was having an emotional outburst because of his tumor throwing off his brain chemistry. Will realized what was happening and apologized for lashing out. He then got a call from Rex, announcing that his test results were in. Will & Sonny headed off to the hospital, after Will got a hug of good luck from his grandfather.
Will & Sonny arrived at Rex's office, where he was waiting with his fiancée and fellow doctor, Sarah. They gave them the good news that Will's brain tumor was benign, meaning he did not have cancer. Will & Sonny were thrilled, realizing they this was the best possible scenario. Rex & Sarah told them the next step would be radiation therapy to shrink the tumor to eliminate the negative effects of the tumor on his brain. Will's happiness was tempered by the realization that he still had a battle to fight to be rid of his tumor.
They were left alone to process the news and Sonny quickly noticed Will was still worried. Will told him that he wished there was a magic potion he could take to get rid of his tumor. He started yearning for a less complicated life, which Sonny admitted was impossible in their town. He also reminded Will that he wasn't doing this alone, even if he had more angry outbursts or lost all of his hair from the radiation. Sonny vowed to be by his side so they could fight this together. Will told Sonny he loved him and Sonny returned the sentiment before the two shared a kiss and final hug.
