GayTV Recap: Schitt's Creek (Episode 5x11)
This week's episode of Schitt's Creek began with David (played by Daniel Levy) revealing to his family that, despite his dislike of surprise parties, he had decided to plan one for his boyfriend Patrick (played by Noah Reid), who had previously revealed that he always wished for one. His family was instantly annoyed that he told them at the last minute due to their inability to keep a secret. He also revealed that he invited Patrick's parents to the party. His father, Johnny, commended him for his efforts.
David looked to secure the cafe for the party, sharing with his pal Stevie and cafe proprietor Twyla how he got Patrick to keep his distance for the day. They were soon interrupted by Johnny, who revealed to David that he greeted Patrick's parents at the family motel and accidentally revealed that Patrick & David were in a romantic relationship, which apparently Patrick never told his parents. David was left shocked.
David headed over to Patrick's apartment, greeting him with flowers for his birthday. He quickly changed the subject to Patrick's parents, mentioning that he realized he had only ever spoken to them when they called David & Patrick's store. Patrick tried to hide the fact that it was true, but David pressed him until he revealed that he indeed had not told his parents about having a boyfriend and they believed David was just his business partner.
Patrick then revealed to David that he never came out to his parents. He told David that they were good people, but he was still afraid of how they would react to finding out the truth. Patrick reinforced how important David is to him and that he didn't want to hide their relationship. He vowed to tell his parents the next time he saw them. It was then that David was forced to reveal his surprise party plans and the fact that Patrick's parents were in town for it. Though David offered to hide their relationship for the night, Patrick refused to allow that and told him that he would tell his parents at the party.
Looking to smooth things over before the party, David went to see Patrick's parents, passing along a gift basket from their store. Seeing they were upset, he tried to calm them, and assure them that Patrick was the same son they always knew, but Patrick's parents revealed that they weren't upset because Patrick's gay. They were upset that he never felt comfortable enough to tell them. David was relieved. His father then arrived, happy to see that things were good. David urged everyone to just play along with the surprise, since Patrick wanted to come out to them at the party. They all agreed.
Patrick pretended to be surprised when he arrived at the cafe and David sprung the surprise party on him. He shared a warm greeting with his parents and David agreed to give them some time to catch-up. Before he could go, Patrick got him alone, sharing his fears about how his parents were going to react. David promised to be there for him, no matter what happened. Patrick told David he loved him, and David returned the sentiment, before Patrick joined his parents.
A nervous Patrick mustered up the courage to come out to his parents, as they attempted to hide the fact that they already knew. Patrick told them that David wasn't just his business partner. He was also his boyfriend. He told them how happy he was and his parents quickly accepted his news, telling him that they would always love him and they were happy he finally told them. Patrick was happy with the outcome as he glanced over to see David's family and Stevie watching curiously from the other side of the room.
After the other guests departed, David & Patrick shared a slow dance in the cafe. Patrick shared that this birthday would go down as one of the best days of his life, given the outcome. He then pressed David for the truth about when his parents actually found out he was gay, surprising David. He revealed they weren't good actors and he could tell they already knew. David then revealed how his father had accidentally outed him when he met them. He also admitted to trying to smooth things over with the gift basket, just so Patrick's birthday wouldn't be ruined. Patrick thanked him, telling him that he succeeded in making it all work out. The two shared a kiss before being interrupted.
