GayTV Recap: Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (Episode 3x11)

The Freeform fantasy series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments returned this week for its final twelve episodes. Episode 11 picked up the main characters as they continued to deal with the presumed death of leading lady Clary. Alec (played by Matthew Daddario) joined his sister Isabelle on a hunt for a downworlder, but they were beaten to the punch by their adopted brother Jace (played by Dominic Sherwood), who took his anger over losing Clary out on the villain. After seeing him run right into danger and get injured, Alec & Isabelle stepped in, apprehending the downworlder.

Alec later paid a visit to his boyfriend Magnus (played by Harry Shum Jr.), who was lighting candles to honor Clary, as part of a montage of the characters dealing with their grief. Magnus thought back to his major interactions with Clary.

The next day, Alec found Magnus having trouble applying his signature eyeliner. He revealed to Alec that he was still having trouble feeling himself after the loss of his magic, which he sacrificed in order to save Jace. When Alec mentioned that he looked great without it, Magnus told him that it was a part of his identity and he couldn't give it up.

The couple was soon interrupted by the arrival of Magnus' friend Katerina and the young warlock Madzie. They experienced a warm reunion, as Magnus revealed that Katerina was going out of town and Madzie would be staying in his care. Alec was excited to spend time with the girl, promising that they would have a fun night of games ahead.

That night, Magnus found Alec reading Madzie a bedtime story. While she pressured him for another, Magnus assured her there would be more stories in the morning. Alec tucked her in, as she asked Magnus to create a moon light projection to help her get to sleep. Unready to explain he no longer had powers, Magnus offered to leave a light on, leading Madzie to show them that she could do the projection herself.

They left the child to sleep and Alec attempted to get steamy with Magnus, who put the brakes on, uncomfortable doing anything with Madzie in the next room. Alec wasn't too happy about that, but Magnus suggested they watch a movie instead. A commotion coming from Madzie's room led them to rush in, finding the girl's former caretaker, the evil warlock Iris, trying to reclaim her.

Magnus sprung into action, forgetting for a moment that he had no magic to fend off Iris' efforts. Alec wasn't far behind using his bow and arrow to scare Iris off. Madzie ran into Magnus' arms, as he shared a worried glance with Alec, not happy that his former nemesis had escaped imprisonment and was on a mission to get Madzie back.

After Madzie was returned to Katerina so she would be hidden from Iris, Alec informed Isabelle & Jace about Iris' appearance. They discussed a plan to locate and apprehend her once again, as Magnus began to formulate a plan to track her down. Alec quickly reminded him that without his magic it would be too dangerous for him to get anywhere near Iris. Magnus refused to sit on the sidelines, telling them that he knows Iris the best and that he's still the most capable of finding her. Alec reluctantly agreed to allow him to come along with the Shadowhunters.

Alec then turned his attention to Jace, demanding he sit this mission out, which Jace refused. Alec reminded him that he gives the orders. He brought up Jace's reckless behavior, due to his loss of Clary. He tried to talk sense into Jace, who only got more angry at not being able to use violence to heal his broken heart. Alec warned him that he was dishonoring Clary with his actions, which caused him to calm down. Alec left him behind, after reminding him to lean on him if he's feeling lost, because he couldn't fathom losing him.

Magnus joined Alec & Isabelle in their hunt for Iris, which seemed to only produce dead-ends. Magnus tried to get used to carrying an actual weapon, just as Iris appeared, taking them by surprise. While Magnus evaded her initial attack, it struck Alec & Isabelle, taking them down. Magnus attempted to fight off her magic with his weapon, but in the end he was captured by Iris, leaving Alec furious.

Magnus found himself trapped by Iris, who demanded that he reveal where Madzie was taken. Magnus claimed to not know, which she knew was a lie. Given his lack of cooperation, she attempted to use her magic to pull the information from his head. Magnus refused to give up, bombarding his mind with painful memories in an effort to shield her from the one she was looking for.

Back at the institute, Alec punished himself for losing Magnus, while trying to come up with a plan to rescue him. Knowing that the only thing that might draw Iris out would be Madzie, Isabelle told her brother she had a plan. Meanwhile, Magnus continued to use his mind to fight back against Iris. The frustrated warlock reminded him that if he didn't have the information she wanted, she would kill him.

Magnus still refused to cooperate, but before Iris could target him again, she received a magical note from Katerina, claiming that she believed in Iris' motives and was willing to help her reunite with Madzie. Magnus was caught by surprise, recognizing the handwriting as Katerina's. She took Magnus to the location in the note and spotted Madzie, only to walk into a trap. She took out her anger on Magnus, until Isabelle & Alec appeared, apprehending her. Alec & Magnus were reunited and relieved.

Back at the institute, Alec supervised Iris' return to Clave custody, only to be confronted over his recent rebellious actions, which haven't sat well with the Clave. He was happy to hear that Clary's previous crimes had been pardoned after her death, but he was warned that the Clave would be watching him very closely given his position as head of the institute. He returned to Magnus' apartment, finding his love still beating himself up over the Iris situation.

Alec pointed out Magnus' bravery in standing up to Iris, even without his power, but Magnus didn't feel any better, revealing to him that he's not used to being in situations where he can't protect himself and he hated needing to be rescued. Alec assured him that it was okay to rely on other people and be taken care of after all he's done to protect other people. He looked to make him feel better with a kiss.

While the kiss brought a smile to Magnus' face, he told Alec that he never wanted to be in a position where he couldn't protect himself. He told Alec that he was going to have to learn to fight evil without magic. Alec quickly volunteered to train him, leaving Magnus feeling even better.
