GayTV Recap: Outlander (Episode 4x11)
Episode 11 of the fourth season of Outlander found lead couple Jamie & Claire off attempting to find their daughter Brianna's love, Roger, leaving the pregnant Brianna in the care of Jamie's aunt Jocasta. Brianna attended a dinner party thrown by her aunt and was caught off-guard by the numerous single men that Jocasta invited to meet Brianna. The group was soon joined by Lord John Grey (played by David Berry), making many of the other men feel inadequate, as he revealed his friendship with Jamie & Claire to Brianna upon their meeting.
Faced with heavy attention from the single men at the dinner party, Brianna sought some power at the table, telling the gathered guests about a psychological game that could reveal things about those that participated. It required them to picture a scenario where they were alone with one person in a forest. After making Judge Alderdyce (played by Andrew Steele) uncomfortable with her evaluation of his scenario, which drew John's attention, Brianna turned her focus to John, who revealed to her that the person he pictured was her father Jamie, surprising her. He revealed that Jamie asked him to visit to check on her. Given her rift with her father over his mistaken treatment of Roger, Brianna grew upset. She decided to leave the room and almost fainted, with John there to catch her.
John escorted her to the parlor, wondering if she was all right. They were joined by her worried handmaid Lizzie, who brought up Brianna's condition. John quickly put the pieces together that Brianna was pregnant, something Jamie did not tell him. Brianna explained to him about her relationship with Roger and her parents' quest to find him. She then told him about her suspicion that Jocasta was attempting to find her a husband since she had not officially married Roger. He passed along a letter from Jamie, before offering to check on her again in the morning.
That night, Brianna awoke from a restless sleep and went looking for a snack, only to discover John having sex in a pantry with Judge Alderdyce, taking her by surprise. The next morning she learned that Jocasta was welcoming one of the bachelors to propose to her, leading her to seek out John, asking him to propose in order to escape her plight. When he refused, Brianna revealed what she saw the night before, catching him off-guard. He urged her not to threaten him with blackmail, knowing it could ruin his life. Brianna instead threatened to tell her father, but John revealed that Jamie was well-aware of his sexual proclivities.
John told her about how dear Jamie is to him, which is why he could never marry his daughter. Realizing John's feelings for Jamie, and learning of Claire's knowledge of it, Brianna apologized for her behavior. John urged her not to give up hope that Roger would be returned to her, given his faith in her parents. Brianna then confided in him that she still worried that Roger might not want her when he learns that her child might be the product of the assault perpetrated upon her by Stephen Bonnet. She feared that taking an unwanted husband would be the end of her hope.
Brianna returned to Jocasta's house, resigned to her fate of being married off when John caught up to her, interrupting before the proposal could be made. He revealed to Jocasta, and Brianna's potential suitor, that he had already proposed. The news took Brianna by surprise, but she went along with his story, pleasing her aunt Jocasta. Later, the two discussed their situation. Brianna still worried for her future, leading John to bring up his son William. He confided in Brianna that he and William did not share blood, but that he loved the boy anyway. He assured her that the same would be true of Roger and her child, filling her again with hope. He walked away without mentioning the fact that William is Jamie's child as well.
