GayTV Recap: The Guest Book (Episode 2x10)
The Season 2 finale of the TBS comedy The Guest Book centered around Dave (played by Matt Walsh), an unhappy husband and father who witnesses the breakup of his neighbor Paul (played by Oliver Hudson) and his wife. Seeing how happy Paul is after his divorce, Dave finds himself growing more disenchanted with his overly-critical and controlling wife Linda. Dave's family heads to their vacation at the Barefoot Retreat guest house and Dave prepares to finally speak his mind and end his marriage, but suffers a heart attack before he can.
Dave wakes up in the guest house and meets Gabe, a sort-of Guardian Angel, who breaks through his religious notions of heaven and explains to him how his afterlife works. Gabe shows him how he can use the guest book to conjure whatever he wants, including who he wants to spend his afterlife with. Dave uses the book to summon Paul, surprising Gabe as he learns that Dave is gay. Dave reveals he has fantasized about Paul several times.
After Dave admits to having never been with a man before, Gabe informs him that Paul appears in Dave's world while he's sleeping in the real world, meaning that anything's possible for Dave and his heart without affecting Paul's reality, as Paul will only believe he's dreaming. Dave tells him that he couldn't fathom making the first move, so Gabe shows him how the guest book can create scenarios to help Dave get his first gay kiss. This gives Dave an idea.
Knowing how Paul has been using dance lessons to spark romance in his newly-single life, Dave writes a dance scenario for them as a couple. Their lengthy romantic dance draws the two men closer and seems to warm Paul's heart to Dave, whom he pulls into the bedroom. Dave realizes that his dreams may finally come true. Paul lays him in the bed and Dave readies himself for a kiss.
Before the kiss can occur, Dave is revived in the real world by paramedics. He is disappointed to realize that he is still married to Linda and sentenced to continue his unhappy life. They head home and Dave begins to unload the car when he encounters Paul, who tells him about the weird dream he had dancing with Dave. Realizing that his experience was real, Dave comes out to Paul, telling him he's gay. Paul is surprised but supportive. Though he tells Dave he's not gay, he does reveal he has a gay brother who is very good-looking and may be perfect for Dave. A happy Dave runs off to end things with the overbearing Linda.
