GayTV Recap: DC's Legends of Tomorrow (Episode 4x8)

This week's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow picked up where last week's episode left off. After John Constantine's decision to change history by saving his love Desmond (played by Christian Keyes) from being sent to hell with the demon Neron, the present timeline was altered. John's rival-turned-ally Charlie discovered that the Legends had become unfeeling hunters obsessed with killing magical beings, while Zari had been transformed into a cat. Charlie found John (played by Matt Ryan) imprisoned, plagued by lingering memories of Desmond's death at his hands, despite changing history. John used his magic to restore Zari, but when John & Charlie agreed to fix the events that caused the Legends' change, Zari objected, knowing that the only true answer was to undo John's history-altering actions with Desmond. Disagreeing with her method, John changed her back into a cat so that he & Charlie could go about fixing the Legends.

John & Charlie made their escape from the Time Bureau, with cat-Zari in tow, going back in time and stopping fellow Legend, Sara Lance, from being killed by a unicorn, which appeared to be the inciting incident that led to the other Legends turning to vengeance on all magical creatures. Their efforts, however, seemed to be in vain as Zari remained in her cat form, and other Legends were killed instead. While Charlie tracked down another event to correct in order to reverse those problems, John found himself growing more insane due to his continued memories of Desmond, despite them being wiped from the timeline. He still confided in Zari that he could not do what she wanted, which would sentence Desmond to hell.

Believing Charlie had finally fixed the Legends' issues, John & Charlie felt relieved, only to then discover Zari and the Legends had become actual puppets. They once again set out to fix the timeline and the Legends appeared to now be safe as Zari was returned to her human form. Charlie & Zari then found it was John in danger, as he passed out with a nosebleed. Zari told him that the anomaly in time that he created was tearing up his mind, as his brain tried to juggle his conflicting memories. She convinced John to restore history, despite Desmond's fate. It didn't mean he was giving up on him or their love. When John agreed, Charlie grew angry, knowing her shape-shifting power would disappear if history was restored, leading her to turn on them.

John traveled back to New Orleans, where he spied his time-changing self altering history and breaking up with Desmond, just as he remembered. When Desmond left the apartment, John explained to him that he had made a mistake breaking up with him and that he hadn’t been himself. A confused Desmond wasn't sure that he could believe him. John told him that Desmond was right and their love was real. Desmond wished they could just go back to being happy and John revealed he wanted that too.

Charlie used her shape-shifting to enlist the help of the Legends, who were still hellbent on killing magical creatures. She put them on John's trail and when Sara discovered three different versions of John in close proximity to one another, she ordered the Legends to take him out, shocking Charlie. Unaware that the Legends had arrived to kill him, John wiped Desmond's memory of their break-up just before his old self returned. He found a disheveled Desmond on the street, and both wondered how he ended up there. They were soon focused back on food and romance, leading to a kiss, which reset the timeline, restoring the Legends to their heroic personas.

The time-restoring wave left present-day John knowing that the timeline had truly been restored as he was back in possession of the medallion that Desmond gave him in the past. It was all bittersweet, as John realized it meant that Desmond did end up in hell thanks to Neron. He returned to the Legends' ship with Zari & Charlie. He explained everything to Sara, who reminded him that the Legends will always have his back, even if Neron finds a way to return. John decreed that if Neron found a way out of hell he would make this personal. That appeared to be true as the final scene of the episode showed Neron back on Earth, masking himself to appear as Desmond.
